Teasing the Teaser or (The Abrams Effect)

I didn't share it here, but I freaked the fuck out when that 10 Cloverfield Lane teaser dropped exactly one month ago today. I am still in total awe of it. And I never even saw the original Cloverfield. Not that that matters. It apparently is only a "blood relative," according to J.J. Abrams, a producer on the film. That said, I don't really care because, when you have a trailer that evokes season 2 of Lost, features Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher, Jr., and the one and only John Goodman, it only takes Tommy James and the Shondell's "I Think We're Alone Now" to truly ice the cake.

Saturday Speaks (and Links): Cabin Fever Edition

On Saturday Morning
I'm getting out of the house today. That's for sure. I haven't worked in two weeks. Here in my little section of East Tennessee, snow has accumulated on five separate occasions in the past 13 days. Yesterday, the sun came out. We broke 45 degrees. The melt began.

But I'm getting out of the house to see my first movie released in 2015, though I'm not sure what yet. Don't worry, you'll know soon enough.

Thursday Movie Picks: Unrequited Love

I'm going with flights of whimsy this week, peeps. Fun and happy stuff, for the most part.

Unrequited love, as a topic, is near and dear to me. I'm pretty sure we've all felt it. I certainly have. It hurts, but it doesn't have to be a sad and sappy thing. Since I equate this topic with youth, that's where I'm going with it.

I feel I'm sensing a trend with the topics over at Wandering through the Shelves' Thursday Movie Picks here in the last few weeks. Oh, yes. Valentine's Day is nigh.

Trailer Drop: Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups

If there is any American filmmaker more polarizing than Terrence Malick, let me know. You know those bumper stickers where a married couple like two different SEC schools, say one likes Auburn and one likes Bama. They say "House Divided" on them. Well, my wife and I both love Tennessee football. We both love Mexican food. We both love movies.

We are divided on the definition of "movie." My wife seems to think that a movie isn't a movie unless it inherently provides entertainment. I know that a movie is a movie if it is a series of moving images projected onto a white screen.

It is an endless debate. I respect my wife's opinion.

The man who inspired this argument. Yeah. Terrence "effing" Malick. The film: 2011's The Tree of Life. Her one and only experience with Malick. Our fight after our screening was so bad that she has vowed to never see another of his films, even the easier-to-watch early ones (Badlands, Days of Heaven).

Late last night, we watched the trailer for his latest philosophical dreamscape starring Christian Bale known as Knight of Cups. On IMDB, it is written that there was no script. This seems to be a trend with Malick's latest mode of filmmaking. He is literally just letting his mood guide the camera and vice-versa. It doesn't work as well for me as his earlier work, but I like the idea. Like Tree of Life and To the Wonder before it, I am sure to end up seeing a movie that I will most likely not want to watch again, though I know I should.

Here's the trailer. It looks downright gorgeous to me.
