My Movie Alphabet Vol. 2

What follows is my post as part of the second iteration of Mettel Ray's brilliant Movie Alphabet. I didn't participate in the original (before my time), but I am jumping at the chance this time around.

So, without further ado, here are few of my favorite things, movie-wise, 27 to be exact. I took a stream of consciousness approach. The first actor, actress, director, or movie that popped into the old noggin'.

Here is My Movie Alphabet:

#
Se7en
(for you #MettelRaySe7en)

A for
Adaptation.
a mind-bending ode to storytelling by screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and director Spike Jonze

B for
Billy Wilder
director of Sunset Boulevard and The Apartment

C for
Cold Mountain
an epic story of love and set in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina

D for
Dog Day Afternoon
"Attica Attica Attica!!!"

E for
Election
because this is the most sharply written political satire ever (and it's also a teen comedy)

F for
Fever Pitch
the one movie my wife and I always agree on

G for
George Washington
the poetic vision of youth in a decaying South from a young David Gordon Green

H for
Harrison Ford
because fucking Indiana Jones, man!

I for
Inside Llewyn Davis
the Coen Brothers were bound to be on this list somewhere

J for
Jennifer Lawrence
Good God!!!

K for
Kevin Kline
because I smile every single time he's on a screen

L for
Love Liza
an unsung leading performance from the late Philip Seymour Hoffman

M for
Manchester by the Sea
screenwriting and acting don't get better

N for
The Nice Guys
Crowe and Gosling together is way better than anyone could've ever guessed, right?

O for
Ocean's Eleven
no movie is more fun or more re-watchable for me

P for
Paul Thomas Anderson
the man who opened my eyes to camera work and keeps getting better

Q for
Quentin Tarantino
the man who opened my eyes to cinema, period

R for
Raising Arizona
you didn't think the Coen Brothers would only turn up once, did you?

S for
Scent of a Woman
because of this scene, the one pictured below

T for
Todd Field
please direct another movie already!!

U for
Umbrellas of Cherbourg
because of all that beautiful color and music and Catherine Deneuve (Good God!!!)

V for
Vanilla Sky
it's just on my mind right now

W for
Wanderlust
Paul Rudd in front of that mirror, man! Never laughed so hard...

X for
Ex Machina
(so...I cheated...what of it?)

Y for
Yellow Submarine
for that Saturday morning when I drank my first ever cup of coffee, very young, this was on

Z for
Zoolander
nothing better starts with a Z

How This All Worked
in case you want to participate, even though I'm under the wire myself right now

RULES

1. List your favourite actors, actresses, movies or directors from # to z

2. I allow a little wiggle room: you may list two under one letter* because it is vol 2 after all!

*in that case, the choices have to be from different categories – actor/director, actress/movie, etc.*

3. If you participated last time, don’t look at your first movie alphabet before vol 2 is ready

4. Comparisons in between your new alphabet and the previous one are highly encouraged

5. Post your Movie Alphabet Vol 2 by the 31st of May, link back to this post and let me know here in the comments or over at twitter @MettelRay (and use the hashtag mettelrayse7en)

6. Use one of the banners below in your post or create your own!

7. Most importantly, have a ton of fun!

  2. Love your list. I enjoy the Ocean's 11 films and so glad to see Billy Wilder as i spoke about him when I did the A to Z Challenge in April. Love Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Quentin is one weird nuts but he is a classic auteur director

  3. That Paul Rudd scene has got to be one of the best improvised moments in a comedy movie ever, right? It warrants that whole movie's existence.

    1. Without a shadow of a doubt. It is incredible. I died laughing. Then laughed more.

  4. Okay, man. But, uh...GET OUT OF MY HEAD.

Hahaha, seriously, while I thought a lot of the other lists I checked out were fantastic, I think ours (uh, had I made one) would line up for about three-quarters of it. No bullshit, I thought I was going to die with that Paul Rudd scene. Like, stop breathing and just happily die on my living room floor.

Oh, and your I pick? There is no better reason.

Hey, one thing? Fever Pitch?! Are you a (fellow) Red Sox fan? Because technically, I was in that movie.

    1. Haha! Glad you like my work. Same on that Paul Rudd scene. It took that movie from meh to fucking fantastic!

As for Fever Pitch...no. I am not a Red Sox fan. In fact, I'm a Yankees guy forever. You can't deny the '04 season or the magic of the Fallon/Barrymore chemistry. Plus, my wife and I are them. And we are huge baseball fans, going to our 14th, 15th, and 16th MLB parks together this summer, including Fenway. Can't wait! History over hatred on that one.

  5. Excellent list, man.

No 20th Century Women for the # pick? No Beginners for the B pick? REALLY? Also, I disagree with your Z pick (nothing better starts with a Z)? REALLY? I think you might be forgetting about David Fincher's greatest film: Zodiac.

Besides those GLARING MISSES (I'm kidding), excellent list. I especially love the Todd Field pick for the T pick. He needs to make another film. In the Bedroom was one of the greatest films of the 2000's.

    1. Zodiac did not cross my mind and I'm pissed about it. But Zoolander is still awesome.

  6. Ooh, this is so lovely!! Se7en is such a great pick, not because it's for me, but it speaks to me on the movie level as well. I love a good crime solving murder mystery thriller and there's no one better than Fincher to deliver a rewatchable movie as Se7en and Zodiac and Gone Girl and I just love it! So I agree with Cameron on this one, Z should have been Zodiac.. but I can't stay mad forever since you did pick one of Fincher's great ones.

I do love other picks you have, including Tarantino of course and Manchester by the Sea, though I didn't pick the last one myself. Oh and Ocean's Eleven, damn..I now want to watch that one. :D

    1. Thanks! I totally agree on Fincher and Seven. And Zodiac (which I do in fact like more than Zoolander for the record...). Ocean's Eleven is always great. So fun. Glad to hear you love Manchester by the Sea as well. I named it #1 of last year. It dug right to the core of me.
