Oscar Nomination Reaction Post

You know by now that I don't really care who gets nominated. I don't follow the Critic Association and Guild Awards. I'm bad at making predictions. So...I'll make this easy.

La La Land wins the big one. This is how I feel:

And this is how I feel when I inevitably find Meryl Streep's name on the Best Actress list:

Because Hailee Steinfeld is the Best Actress of the year. She got hosed! Now, everybody see The Edge of Seventeen to wash the bullshit down.

The end.

Can't wait to watch the show, which is what I really love about Oscar season! Looking forward to the 26th. And you can look forward to my Best of 2016 Lists the day after.

  1. I love Meryl but 20 is just so extreme. It's not even as if you can put the blame on her, she didn't even campaign this time...although her Golden Globes speech, heartfelt and real did a lot of the work for her. And she was good in FFJ but not special enough to make that top five over many other actresses.

I haven't seen Annette Bening's performance, which is getting the lion's share of the snub talk but I have seen Taraji P. Henson's work in Hidden Figures and would have much rather seen her in the lineup.

It might seem mean but I'm delighted that Amy Adams didn't make the cut. Since four out of the ridiculous five previous nominations she was awarded were for merely adequate performances that didn't deserve to be honored I applaud the academy's reluctance to elevate her into the rarified company of Deborah Kerr, Thelma Ritter and Glenn Close since she didn't have a chance to win this time out either.

    1. Yes. It's getting ridiculous that Meryl seems to just have a standing spot in the lineup year in and year out. Makes one movie=steals a nom. I'd like to see her REALLY deserve one. It's been a few years.

I am really feeling bad for discounting Hidden Figures. I'm going the first chance I get. I have heard nothing but great things. Will be seeing it and 20th Century Women this weekend.

I like Amy Adams more than you. What's your one of the five? I thought her work in American Hustle was damn great.

    2. American Hustle is the one.

I think you'll really like Hidden Figures. Taraji and Octavia have gotten deserved lavish praise but Janelle Monae is equally good though she has missed out on a lot of the conversation.

    3. Thank God someone else who find Adams overrated as hell :P

    4. Adams deserved the Oscar for Junebug, too. Utter perfection. I'm 50/50 on her other nominations, though. Had one of them been for Enchanted then we could truly call her "overdue".

  2. La La Land will win so will Emma Stone in this movie. Casey Affleck will win. In Meryl Streep's new movie, we see her sitting on a chair picking her nose, she starts to cough and spits up a piece of chicken and then she leans to the right side and let's out a fart...I see an Oscar nom for her next year.

    1. I'd be happy with Stone, but I think Portman is really the Best Actress on the list. Affleck's is the best performance of the year, period. Meryl Streep... *shakes head*

Hailee Steinfeld is a close miss for my Best Actress list. However, I would have nominated Woody Harrelson for Best Supporting Actor.

I'll have my own Oscar nomination reaction post this weekend. My Best of 2016 list will be coming out shortly after the Oscars as well. (I still have a lot of movies to see/watch before I make my list).

    1. Right!? At least one more of us is okay with Adams. I think she's consistently great. Good call.

  5. I had been predicting Streep for a while, but locked her in after that speech at the Golden Globes. Sealed the deal, 100%. I think she's great in Florence Foster Jenkins, if far from her best work. She nails the comedy but the dramatic moments all feel a bit... expected, coming from her. Thing is, I had predicted she would kick out Huppert, which would have had me REALLY pissed off. Instead it was Adams, who I thought was on the bubble until she got the SAG nomination - it's a great performance, but not very showy.

Hailee Steinfeld got screwed by the same logic that kept Emma Stone from getting a nom for Easy A and Shailene Woodley/Miles Teller in The Spectacular Now: Performances in teen movies are apparently unworthy of Oscar attention.

    1. Don't I know it. Teen movies just lose. Such a shame. I so agree on Teller and Woodley in The Spectacular Now, which is easily my favorite film of that year. I'm such a sucker for first love...

Anybody could predict Streep. At this point, all she has to do is be in a movie. That giving a passionate political speech makes one a lock is what I hate most about Oscar. It's ONLY a politics game and the movies I usually love the most never win. Having said that, I'm fine with everything La La Land WILL WIN, though my actual favorite of the year is not La La Land.
