"Why am I here?"
This is an actual question asked by FBI Agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) in Denis Villeneuve's latest twisty tale of the worst of humanity, Sicario. He's taken on the sordid past of a Middle Eastern immigrant in 2010's Incendies, the lengths a father will go to save his child in 2012's Prisoners, and the dueling personas of a man and his doppelganger in 2013's Enemy. That question could've been (and may have been) spoken by any of the characters in any of his films at one point or another. In Sicario, his dive into the world of Mexican drug cartels, that question is everything.

Up until about two weeks ago I hadn't even heard of this. Now, everyone is raving about it. I'm going to have to see this.

DeleteI liked Prisoners but was quite underwhelmed by Incendies and absolutely HATED Enemy but damn, Villeneuve really did an amazing job with this one. My favorite thing about this movie though, has got to be Benicio Del Toro's performance. Masterful is right
ReplyDeleteI honestly liked Enemy more than Incendies and Prisoners. Wouldn't consider any of them bad. Incendies and Prisoners just wanted us to believe things that don't deserve to be believed. Benicio is boss in this thing, man. I want him for Supporting Actor for sure.
DeleteI'm so here for this, DESPITE not liking Prisoners or Incendies. He has talent, for sure, but he needs better scripts. Looks like he has a keeper here, so I can't wait to see what he's done with it.
ReplyDeleteAs Sati said below, even this script has its flaws, but this is a top-notch crime drama, man. Blunt and Del Toro are forces to be reckoned with. Del Toro has my favorite performance of the year, so far. Hands down.
DeleteI loathed Prisoners but I liked this one a lot. The script had flaws but Del Toro was so good it made me forgive all of that
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say I loathed Prisoners. It was way too well-made for that. I would definitely call it outlandish and even silly at times though. Same for Incendies. I debated dropping half a star for the weaknesses in the script but decided against it. With that Del Toro performance and the perfection in tone managed between Villeneuve and Deakins, I had to go full four. I am sure this is of the most badass movies I'll see this year.
DeleteMatt saw this one at TIFF and was a little disappointed. He didn't dislike it, I think it just didn't live up to the hype for him. That said, it wasn't foremost on my list to see,b ut I think it's inching up there!
ReplyDeleteI haven't felt way too much hype, honestly, so that didn't affect me. That probably has to do with living in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by people who have hardly heard of this movie. I loved it! As far as mainstream cinema is concerned, this is a must see this year. Not totally perfect. But perfect enough.
