Thursday Movie Picks: Movies based on a Comic (Non-Superhero)


I totally got too busy to put something good together this week.

Which sucks!!! Because this week's category as part of Wandering through the Shelves' Thursday Movie Picks is a good one.


So, here is my minimalist post with my picks this week in the category of Non-Superhero Comic/Graphic Novel Adaptations:

From Hell 
(The Hughes Brothers, 2001)


Road to Perdition 
(Sam Mendes, 2002)


American Splendor 
(Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, 2003)


I reckon these sort of adaptations were sort of a thing back in the early aughts. 

Side Note: I've been to the University Heights section of Cleveland, where Harvey Pekar, the subject of American Splendor, is from. There's a statue of him in the library there. Really awesome!

    I've only seen Road to Perdition which I liked a great deal, a very stylish look and packed with good performances. I've heard awful things about From Hell and I'm not much of a Depp fan but I've always meant to catch up with American Splendor I had no idea it was based on a graphic novel.

      From Hell is silly but great looking. I'm not big into Depp either. Never really have been. But this movie was the shit when I was in high school (when it came out). My friends and I thought it was so cool...

      American Splendor is really a biopic about Harvey Pekar, who wrote the underground comic book series called American Splendor in the 70s and 80s. Great movie!!

      You really should. Even From Hell is worth a watch. It's kind of stupid, but it looks great.

    I was waiting for American Splendor to show up. I still haven't seen it, but know its reputation as something quite wonderful.

      Great, great movie! One of the great low-key comedies of my lifetime. Paul Giamatti is Oscar worthy in that thing, man.

    Road to Perdition is just phenomenal all the way around. I love American Splendor, as well. Giamatti is perfect. Wish me luck on From Hell. It's on my Blind Spot list this year. I'm a bit nervous because I've heard both very good and very bad things about it.

      I haven't seen From Hell in ten years but I remember loving it. It's just a really cool flick. Nothing grand or special about it really. Don't expect a masterpiece. Just a good looking, period serial killer procedural.

    I've only seen Road to Perdition and it's easily my favorite, though I've heard great things about American Splendor and bad things about From Hell, I will probably catch the latter in October when I do my Graphic Horror series, watching horror & thrillers based on graphic novels. - Bubbawheat

      American Splendor is funny in a very dry sort of way. Really well acted. Road to Perdition is gorgeous. From Hell will be a good choice for that.
